The Medici family
a dynasty at the power

Walk together through the most important places that portray the story of a family who governed in Florence for over three centuries! Our tour starts from the convent of S. Marco renovated by Cosimo the Elder in 1434 after his exile; then the walk proceeds until the Cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore where the Pazzi conspiracy took place, to arrive to Piazza della Repubblica where Cosimo I established the Jewish ghetto in 1570s. Palazzo Vecchio represents the symbol of the power of Cosimo I: the duke lived here from 1540 imposing his power over the old Florentine Republic. Cosimo commissioned the Vasarian Corridor to Giorgio Vasari to join Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti, the last mansion of the Medici family. Here Anna Maria Luisa died: she settled her inheritance on the people of Florence through the “Family Pact” of 1737.
