The Florentine guilds

In 1340 the old granary of Florence, Orsanmichele, turned into a church. It tells us about the life of Florence in XIII-XIV centuries when guilds were at the government of the city in the Priors Palace. The guild of “Textile Merchants” was the oldest and the richest one, it financed works for the edification of the Baptistery. Niccolò Machiavelli, the famous politician and writer, was enrolled among the “wine sellers”. When did guilds increase their power? Who was enrolled and why? Dante Alighieri for example belonged to the guild of “Doctors and Pharmacists”. The merchants’ court faces on Piazza della Signoria: it was born in the XIV century to solve quarrels among guilds. We will walk together through the centre of Florence to discover where guilds had their own seats passing in front of the guild of “Judges and Notaries”, the only one Pietro Leopoldo didn’t abolish to complete our tour in front of the Baptistery observing an interesting symbol related to Middle Ages and to the Florentine trade.
